Chinglish

Posted on July 16, 2007 - Filed Under Places |

I failed to take a photo of the utterly incomprehensible safety instructions in the lift of the first hotel we stayed in, in China.  I thought there would be plenty of opportunity.  But I think the Chinglish is on the wane - nothing quite as funny/bad has appeared.  However, in the hotel I am currently in, in Nanning, we have lucked out with a ‘business room’ and have a computer in the room.  Now I have wrenched it away from Mark’s grasp, I will transcribe the instructions from our ‘Stipulation of Lodging’, namely point number 5:

Don’t excessive during, quarrel, play gambling, drug taking, visit, visit prostitutes and spread lectionary, salacious book picture, photo and video.  If you find the appearance of rogue, gambling and swindling, please reporting time.

This is made even funnier by the fact that room 2002 has been ringing us on an hourly basis, till 11pm last night and started again around 2.30pm this afternoon.  Room 2002 is the barber shop and those paying attention over at Mark’s blog will know what that means.  As well as a barber shop the services rendered are listed as:

provide service like beautifying, hairdress & massage.  Service time from 10.30am to 01:00.

As we have time to kill this afternoon and Mark was hogging the ‘puter, I ambled down for some beautifying.  Hmmm.  No signs of beautifying, nor indeed of any hairdressing.  Just two very bored young women lounging on a sofa.  I almost forgive them their attempts to drum up business, even if they woke us up.  Apparently in business hotels in China, this is fairly par for the course.

A bit of housekeeping:  I’ve added a few more links and gubbins down the side, including my profiles for social networking sites, a map of where we’ve been and a list of what I’ve been reading.  I’ve also added an email me button to this blog over on the right. One of the things I promised not to look at when I was finishing the MBA was Facebook as I knew it would not be conducive to finishing my dissertation (Flickr is bad enough).  Good thing too - I’m now completely addicted.  If you’re on facebook and I haven’t requested a friend listing yet, look me up.
